Windows is the leading desktop operating system in the world today. It has established itself as versatile and reliable enough for home and corporate users to trust it for their daily computing needs.
Windows operating systems include NT for home users and Windows Server for servers and Windows IoT for embedded devices. Defunct families include Windows 98, Mobile, and Phone.
Version 1.0 was released in November 1981 and had to compete with Apple’s operating system. It achieved little popularity. Instead of a real operating system, it extended MS-DOS. It included many well-known apps such as Calculator and Control Panel.
Version 2.0 was released in December 1987 and was more popular but still wasn’t quite there yet.
Version 3.1 was the first version that achieved broad commercial success and featured a lot of important improvements.
Version 95 first introduced the Start Menu, the Taskbar and Windows Explorer. It was still MS-DOS based and had a horrible reputation for instability and crashes.
XP was the best, and only 7 comes close to it.
