The philosophy behind the Linux kernel is to be free and accessible to anyone. Unlike the original Unix operating system which was completely closed up and Minix which was limited to educational use only, the creation of Linux Torvalds is free for everyone to use and modify.
For this reason there are thousands of distributions of the OS. Definitely more than there are users for. Popular distributions include Ubutntu, Debian, Red Hat, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, CentOS and many others.
Many people claim that the operating system is more secure than Windows and Mac OS. While it delivers the best security for the price, you certainly need to pay attention to what you are doing, because hackers don’t sleep much.
