Linux is the world’s leading operating system in all areas, except the Desktop. From microcontrollers to smartwatches and supercomputers, it absolutely dominates the computer market. It’s so overpowered it’s not even funny.
The famous kernel was first released on September 17, 1991, by Linus Torvalds. Since than it has gained massive popularity.
The philosophy behind the Linux kernel is to be free and accessible to anyone. Unlike the original Unix operating system which was completely closed up and Minix which was limited to educational use only, the creation of Linux Torvalds is free for everyone to use and modify.
For this reason there are thousands of distributions of the OS. Definitely more than there are users for. Popular distributions include Ubutntu, Debian, Red Hat, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, CentOS and many others.
Many people claim that the operating system is more secure than Windows and Mac OS. While it delivers the best security for the price, you certainly need to pay attention to what you are doing, because hackers don’t sleep much.
This section will focus mainly on Ubuntu and CentOS/Alma/Rocky Linux as they are the leading server distributions in the moment.
