How to set goals

How to set goals and why do they matter for success? What is the importance of goals and how do they make me more productive? Do people with goals achieve success easier than people without goals? Let’s find out.

What is the importance of goals?

Your goals are your plan for your life, year, month, day. They are like the skeleton of your body. Without a skeleton, the soft tissues wouldn’t be able to stay upright on their own. People with written goals achieve success faster and easier than people who simply improvise. If you have written goals and plans, you know what opportunities to take and what to pass. Which way to go and what places to avoid.

If you have a roadmap and know where you are going, you are very likely to arrive at your destination. Without a map, even if you know where you want to go, you will never know which way to take and you won’t arrive at your destination at all. If you don’t have neither a map, nor do you know where you want to go, you will forever drift in the desert, never arriving anywhre.

Most people have a vague idea of what they want in life, but they don’t have the map. So, start making goals and writing them down now.

Another important side effect of setting written goals is that the human subconscious loves following written words. If you don’t believe me, set some written goals, which are reasonable and easy to achieve and lock them up in your desk’s drawer. After some time, when you look at them again, you will see that you have achieved them. That’s because the human subconscious is drawn to written words.

This one is fairly straightforward. You need to set S.M.A.R.T goals for them to work. S.M.A.R.T stands for Simple Measurable Actionable Realistic and Time-bound.

Simple – your goal must be so simple that even a child can tell if you have achieved it.

Measurable – there must be a way to tell if you have succeeded or not.

Actionable – can I take action on this goal or is it out of my control?

Realistic – is it realistic to expect to achieve this goal in this time?

Time-bound – you must set a reasonable, generous deadline for yourself to accomplish your goal. Whatever deadline you have in mind, multiply it by three, because that’s how much it will take realistically to do it.

Resolve that every day you will do something to advance your goals

Look at your goals and plan your day accordingly. Remember that the way you spend your days is the way you spend your life. Resolve to work on your goals every day.
